Print-Leeds becomes sole label supplier to Marston’s Beer Company

Print-Leeds, the specialist print house based in Leeds, has become the sole supplier of wet glue labels to Marston’s Beer Company. This is the result of a competitive tendering process.

Print-Leeds has printed wet-glue labels for Marston’s for seven years in a contract that was split across two suppliers. The new sole supplier contract is for a three year period and is worth in the region of £2m per annum. The labels will be used right across Marston’s bottled beer brand portfolio including Wainwright, Hobgoblin, McEwan’s and Pedigree.

Rod Fisher, managing director at Print-Leeds said: “We have become a brand synonymous with the food and beverage industries. Marston’s is a long-standing client and we are really pleased to be appointed its sole wet glue label supplier. This wouldn’t have been possible before we invested £5m in new premises and a state of the art Heidelberg 7-colour press.”

Print-Leeds moved premises just over a year ago to a much larger 30,000 sq ft factory which has now been fully refurbished on a four acre site. At the same time the company invested in a new £2.5m Heidelberg XL106 7-colour press with coater which is running alongside its existing Heidelberg 7-colour UV litho press. This was part of a planned £5m investment to double the company’s production capacity, streamline production, provide greater flexibility and bring the all-important contingency option in-house for the production of wet glue labels, composite tube wraps, litho box laminates and UV litho work.

Print-Leeds prides itself on being the most technically advanced printer in the UK, constantly investing in new machinery to open up new markets and better serve its clients. The company acquired a wet glue label printer five years ago which trebled its turnover. MD, Rod Fisher, is currently looking at a digital press which will launch the company into the self-adhesive market.

Rod explains: “We are constantly being asked by clients and prospective clients about self-adhesive labels. The beauty of moving into this market means we could print labels for any industry. The press we are looking at is one of the most technically advanced on the market.“

This would be a further evolution for Print-Leeds which started life as a repro house, moving into printing in 2001 and into labels in 2013.

Print-Leeds’ Finance Team don’t do things by halves

A member of the management team and the company’s management accountant both took part in the same half marathon trail race last weekend.

Isobel Hainsworth-Brear, director and Linda Bullock from Longfield Business Services, both ran the Baildon Boundary Way – a circular trail half marathon encompassing some challenging terrain around Baildon, Esholt, Shipley and Saltaire. Isobel crossed the finish line in 2:18:07 and Linda in 2:25:57 – proving they don’t do things by halves!

Both are members of running clubs – Isobel is a member of Airecentre Pacers and Linda is a member of Pudsey Pacers. The picture is an opportune shot of the pair running together along the canal by Salts Mill, Saltaire.

Paper prices are rising again this month

Paper prices are set to rise again this month (October) with some suppliers informing customers of increases of up to 8%. The soaring price of pulp is mainly to blame for the fourth increase this year.  This is not just an increase for the UK but Europe wide as the demand for pulp increases.

The products that are mainly affected include woodfree coated and uncoated grades in sheets, reels and cut sizes, board and speciality products, plus some office paper.

Print-Leeds’ managing director, Rod Fisher said: “There is not much we can do about the situation as we can’t control it but I, like all other printers, am not happy about the increases.  As a firm we are continually testing new materials and suggesting new methods of production to customers. We are also pushing our procurement department for a hold or more competitive prices from other suppliers which has worked well for digital print but for wet glue labels there are so few suppliers of the materials we use. It is a sad fact that everything is going up and the uncertainty over the deal for Brexit is exacerbating this. We are defiantly working our hardest to be competitive and efficient.”

The BPIF’s latest Printing Outlook which was published in August showed that 62% of people who took the survey stated that board and paper pricing is a major business concern. This is a 30% rise from the study published in May 2017.

Rod Fisher added: “We are in constant dialogue with the mills and merchants to ensure we are fully informed of any new developments or methods to maximise production and keep waste to a minimum. Keeping ahead of the game means we can react better as a business.”

Mason rides again

Paul Mason competing in the Cheshire 100

For the second year running, label sales executive, Paul Mason has completed the Cheshire 100 cycle sportive. Starting at Arley Hall near Knutsford, the course was a repeat of the previous year, over the flat Cheshire plain then up into the foothills around Macclesfield Forest.

Some challenging weather conditions saw thick mist and slippery roads on the higher ground and it was a case of controlled braking during the descents. All was well though and conditions turned to warm sunshine for the rest of the ride back out to the finish.

Several months of rigorous training prior to the event saw Paul complete the 100 miles (including 3,680ft of climbs) in 6 hours and 21 minutes, a full 25 minutes quicker than last year. Congratulations Paul!

Print-Leeds director completes Yorkshire Tough Mudder

A member of our management team completed the Yorkshire Tough Mudder on Sunday 29 July 2018 as part of a team from her local gym.

This is Isobel Hainsworth-Brear’s second Tough Mudder and this time her team, Hollins Heroes, completed the course in 3 hours 15 minutes. The event was held at Broughton Hall in Skipton and was 10 miles of undulating mixed terrain, interspersed with 20 very muddy and wet obstacles. The extremes of the course were not helped by the driving rain.

Isobel said: “It’s a great event that tests your fitness, courage and stamina. We completed the course as a team which is excellent for team building and friendship. The whole ethos of Tough Mudder is about helping all the other Mudders you meet on the course – there is great camaraderie and Tough Mudder is great at building a community.”

Print-Leeds signs a five year deal with Agfa

Print Leeds has praised Agfa’s proactive approach and rewarded their patience by
signing a new five-year plate contract and investing in Agfa’s Arkana plate processor
and wide format Asanti workflow for their business.

Print Leeds Operations Director, Paul Fisher, said “I felt there was more synergy moving forward
with Agfa and have been impressed by their product innovations over the years. Whilst they have
never directly supplied Print Leeds before, they have proactively kept us aware of their

developments over a sustained period of time, giving me the confidence to make the move when
the time was right.”

The timing came when Print Leeds were planning the move to new premises, the old Drawn Metal
site in Bramley Leeds, four times the size of their old facility. They had invested in another
Heidelberg XL106-7 seven colour press, so they went in search of a new plate deal to satisfy their
increasing orders. A new environmentally friendly processor was also required and as the Agfa
Arkana offered such a light footprint, using a bath with just 15 litres capacity, Print Leeds felt it
would help with their retention of ISO14000, where a year on year reduction on environmental
impact is required. The deal was finally clinched by Agfa’s unique Asanti workflow, offering an
advanced, but easy to use workflow solution for the businesses wide-format department.

The Asanti production upgraded their workflow technology and whilst it was originally designed to
be used with Agfa output engines, the Asanti’s flexibility facilitates the driving of third party
engines either direct or by using a generic output.

Print Leeds, established in 2002, moved into a new four-acre site just two months ago and whilst
work is still underway modernising the facility, it offers plenty of room for growth over its four
industrial buildings. Investing in the business and new technology is nothing new to Print Leeds,
Managing Director Rod Fisher, who started his career in reprographics, bought his first Heidelberg
press in 2002. He purchased a further business, that specialised in labels, a few years later and
now his business has 39 employees, three print divisions: Labels, Litho UV on to plastics and Wide
Format Digital and boasts a £5m turnover.

The company’s new 5-year deal with Agfa is fundamentally based around printing plates. They use
an estimated 11,000 square meters per annum, which is set to grow with their additional
Heidelberg press and they selected to use the Agfa Energy Elite Eco Plates known for their longrun
performance. These plates are an advanced and robust no-bake thermal printing plate for
high-end, high-performance commercial, packaging and UV printing.

The Agfa Arkana processor, perfectly complements their Energy Elite Eco printing plate. It offers
consistent quality plate processing with minimal chemistry usage and maintenance, allowing
printers to further reduce their Eco footprint. Maximum throughput even on Very Large Format
(VLF) CtP lines makes it the perfect match for high production and heavy-duty environments.

Arkana (a product of Agfa’s ECO3 principle of Ecology, Economy and Extra Convenience)
incorporates a small developer tank, drastically lowering replenishment rates and considerably
reducing chemical consumption. It features the Agfa patented gum cascade technology in which
the gum both cleans the plate and protects it with a finishing layer. The process eliminates the
need for rinsing water so all in all it produces up to 50% less collectable waste than similar
products. Its long bath life reduces maintenance frequency, while the clean chemistry technology
used in the system reduces maintenance time.

The Agfa Asanti was purchased as a completely automated production hub for the company’s, non
Agfa, wide format printer. It features Agfa’s award-winning colour management solution and
integrates with the latest version of Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) enabling highly specific
functionalities (like nesting, see-through concept, proofing support) together with fast, automatic
pre-flighting. It avoids errors, minimises manual interventions, shortens pre-press procedures and
simplifies the entire printing process.

Owner Rod Fisher concludes “The deal with Agfa has been part of our £5m investment in new
premises during late 2017. The plate price obviously had to be right and the product exceed our
expectations, but knowing that AGFA is a well established brand in the industry, with trusted
relationships, gave us the confidence to change.“

Print-Leeds makes move to double production

Specialist printing company Print-Leeds has moved premises in the first part of the company’s expansion and £5m investment plan which will double its production capability.

The company has moved to a new four acre site in Bramley, Leeds half a mile from its original premises in Pudsey. The new site comprises of two 30,000 sq ft units, one of which Print-Leeds will fully occupy by the end of this year.

The office, production facilities and the digital division have already moved and the company’s current Heidelberg 7-colour litho press is due to be dismantled and moved during the Christmas break.

The company has ordered a new Heidelberg XL106 7-colour with coater which will be installed alongside the existing press and both will be up and running for the first week in January. This will give the firm double the production capacity, streamline production, provide greater flexibility and will bring the all-important contingency option in-house for the production of wet glue labels, composite tube wraps, litho box laminates and all the litho plastics work.

This is a £5m investment for Print-Leeds and another milestone in the company’s long history.

Rod Fisher, managing director of Print-Leeds said: “It is the wet glue label division that has spearheaded this expansion programme as demand rises for this type of printing. Despite extending our previous premises when we acquired S&C Labels we have outgrown the building and its production capability. Tanda Works gives us a lot of options: room for two presses, a newly housed digital division, a specific finishing department, paper storage and we will be able to add a PSL line. Its exciting times.”

Property consultant Eddisons has completed on the sale of Print-Leeds’ old premises and the purchase of the new, with a combined sale price of £2.8m.

Steven Jones, director of agency at Eddisons, said: “We are seeing an escalating demand for quality industrial space in the right location and it was satisfying to be able to assist a local Leeds business in both selling their existing premises and relocating to a great new site.”

He added: “The new Print-Leeds site has two units and the neighbouring Anchor Works on Swinnow Lane will be available for any 30,000 sq ft occupiers looking for freehold or leasehold premises.”

Eddisons has seen a recent influx of new freehold sales instructions in Leeds. Mr Jones continued: “There is particularly good demand in the market currently. Yet again we expect to see all vacant possession opportunities being snapped up in the short term due to the lack of development and supply in the market.”
